Problem : You have been using winscp tool in windows to access your remote server. Now the geek inside you make a move to linux and you are stuck how to use the passkey used in winscp with openssh client in linux.

Solution: First of all, the .ppk file is putty specific one and you need to convert it to the openssh format, so that it can be used with ssh command in the terminal.

To convert the ppk file download the puutygen tool in ubuntu (the commands vary a lil bit depending on the flavour of linux you are using):

sudo apt-get install putty

This will automatically install the puttygen tool.

Now to convert the ppk file to be used with ssh command execute the following in terminal

puttygen mykey.ppk -O private-openssh -o my-openssh-key

Now, you can easily access to remote server using:

sudo ssh -v user@example.com -i my-openssh-key

Cheers!!!

Recently, while checking the e commerce overview on google analytics i got the message on some reports in red background.

“Multiple decimal separators in pattern “Rs.###,##0.##”×”

This is a bug in google analytics. The google analytics appends . after Rs symbol which causes some parsing problems on generating reports. The work around for it is to change your currency to $. Your revenue and reports will still be in Rs. and figures will not change, it will simply append $ instead of Rs. You can change the currency by editing the profile of Google Analytics.

Hope this will save time for someone.

Cheers!!!!

Since past two months, i have not been to a long trek. It feels like it has been now a part of me, to atleast go to mountains once a month. So, to cover up all this, i have been watching a lot of mountaineering movies and started reading the novel “The road to a Mountain in Tibet”. Last month when i couldn’t handle this feeling, i went on a solo trek to Sinhagad Fort just 31km from my place in PUNE. It is a 3km trek to the fort. My friends ask me why do you go to mountains and climb up unnecessarily. I will say it is a feeling that cannot be explained, you have to feel it on your own. It brings peace to your heart and gives you time to think who you are, what are you doing, what do you want from your life. For me climbing and travelling in mountains is like a meditation. After returning back to normal life i feel more focused, calm and can concentrate on anything easily.

Recently, I have been planning a 4 day hike from Bhimashankar to Dhakoba top. With Adil sir on-board, i think its time to cover it during the holi holidays because the more late we do, the more irritating and difficult it will become due to the increasing temperature in Maharashtra. Shown below is a map by Chakram Hikers, they traverse this route in the past opposite of what i intend to take.

Quick description of git says:
Git is a free & open source, distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.

Every Git clone is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server.Branching and merging are fast and easy to do.

New to GIT:
If you are new to git, you can start digging the documentation in the git website.
or get the pro-git book from http://progit.org/book.

Last but not the least, create a github account and start using it. GitHub is a web-based hosting service for software development projects that use the Git revision control system. Github is the best way you can manage and share your code in the cloud.

Install GIT from source on your server with these easy steps:
If you want to setup your own git server within your organization and not use github you can go with the following steps.

To install git , you need to have the following libraries that GIT depends on, which you can install using the command below, depending on your system:

apt-get install libcurl4-gnutls-dev libexpat1-dev gettext \

libz-dev libssl-dev

$ yum install curl-devel expat-devel gettext-devel \

openssl-devel zlib-devel

After installing all the necessary dependencies, download the latest version of git source code from website,
http://git-scm.com/download. Here you can download the debian, windows, osx and solaris precompiled packages or just download the source from the right box under download git.

After you have downloaded the source files, compile and install them (yes, you are right using the make and make install command)

$ tar -zxf git-1.7.2.2.tar.gz

$ cd git-1.7.2.2

$ make prefix=/usr/local all

$ sudo make prefix=/usr/local install

PS: if you downloaded the precompiled binaries, these steps will not be applied.

Once you are done, you can start using git.

This was a old post written by Arib Sir for my blog. Those were the good old golden days of college. I thought this excellent piece of writing need to be indexed by google and should exist in cloud, so i am posting it here again. If you like this, you can follow his blog and make sure you gift him a two men tent before following.

I never thought I would live to see this day but it has come rather too soon. Our only romance with web was afforded by self-set, excruciatingly slow and infinitely troublesome Reliance dial up shared amongst 8 seemingly most enthusiastic users. Waiting for a humble Google page to load, we would dream of broadband connection for every room. A thought so far fetched that thoughts of Mahtam providing the most hygienic food, Professors being liberal and Kisan Mela being replaced by Auto expo seemed way too realistic in comparison.

Although it may seem like an eternity , but its been only 2 years since we left the place. And I am told by various juniors that they now have blazing fast internet right at their desktops. I am yet to see it to believe it because after all it’s Pantnagar and there is a prevalent tendency of blowing news out of proportions. The reported 400 kbps may only be 40 or even 4 kbps , numerous GBs of @#$% downloaded may only be few minutes of FLV vids. But there certainly is some element of truth in the news which is evident by deluge of FB updates and tweets regarding most trivial of matters.

It has brought about a paradigm shift laterally it appears. In good ol’ days (not long ago) the LAN used to be the sole battleground and the only stage. An act was ridiculed, or a gaming achievement was applauded by sharing text or screenshots by the name of Must see or Dekhi bhaiyo . But it has gone to a new level with advent of web. The world is stage now and inevitably there are new celebrities. One particular person that deserves special mention here is certain Mr. Gitanshu Amola whose obligatory “ haha” “LOL” or “ faadu “ after every FB update has become the most visible entity on web.

Most drastic change was revealed by Mr Kutaula (the author of this blog). Once ignorant ( I remember a professor trying to power on a system using button on Optical drive) , professors have learnt to tame the unlimited power of web and unleash it on hapless netizens. Case in point is our own innocent Mr Kutaula caught red handed partying in Noida with seniors while he was short on attendance by quite a margin. While uploading party pics, little did poor fellow know that he was being watched in his own familiar territory? Certain Mr XX of CS department caught glaringly blatant FB updates and pit it against Kutaula’s then defenseless alibi. Now who is to blame is subject to perception, it can be either Kutaula , Prof, general tendency to believe that Profs are ignorant, or FB’s much maligned privacy settings. Whatever it is one thing is sure, Pantnagar has finally arrived on Web. The very distinct border between realms of Professors and students have somehow been erased and have provided us with a common place. And the best part is we too are part of it, watching merrily from a safe distance the fortunes and misfortunes of either party.

Long back people used to (they still, out of unawareness or laziness) write their HTML, CSS, Javascript code in single file. But soon they realized that the code they write can be divided into three fundamental layers:

Content Layer – HTML

Presentation Layer – CSS

Behavior Layer – Javascript

Keeping your code in three different layers is a good idea because it makes your code more readable, can easily maintain it in the long run, reuse the code in other projects. One more reason is that people who visit your website may read content using different browsers, mobile and handheld devices, rss feeds so many time you may want to send only the content part leaving back the design and behaviour.

Content Layer – HTML

While writing the HTML code never forget the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Silly). Never mix the HTML code with non-content information.

<p> <font color="red">To make sure your code is readable, keep all the layers seperate</font></p>

The old tags like <font>,<b>,<u>,<i> that describes how the content should look like when its displayed in the browser is a part of non-content information because controlling how your content should look like in browser must always be handled by the presentation layer i.e. CSS

Presentation Layer – CSS

The content of page should entirely be in HTML and it styling should be specified in CSS code that is applied to the page. CSS can be used in three ways

Inline Style:

<p style="color:red;"> Hello </p>

Inline style messes your html code. So it is surely not the way go.

Embedded Style:

&lt;style type="text/css"&gt;

.navigation{

color:red;

}

&lt;/style&gt;

Embedded style keeps your code clean but it ties your css code in a single file. Many times you may want to share the css across multiple pages.

External Style:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css"/>

external surely is the real way to go. It keep your html and css separate and you can share your css code across many pages.

Behavior Layer- Javascript

Like CSS you can also use your javascript code inline, embedded and in external file. Keeping your javascript in a separate file not only ties the behavior of your page in a separate file but also helps to reuse the same javascript for other pages too.

Unfortunately, even many professional web developers doesn’t understand the importance and happiness associated with writing a semantic, clean code. Out of laziness one may not want to write a css and javascript code in a seperate file but it does benefit in a long run and nothing feels better than having a chilled beer after writing a quality code.

Happy Coding,
Cheers!!!
